Yo Yo Mundi - "Munfrà" (Felmay fy 8178, Italia 2011)

How can you not appreciate a record so full of melody and timbre, joyful and sad, "like a beautiful opulent polenta" (words of Paolo Conte), light and deep, nostalgic and proud?

admit that he never loved the Yo Yo Mundi, but this wide-ranging project, covering different histories and cultures and places around the "Munfrà", Monferrato, gathering "fragments of stories among the smallest of events history "(words of the group) is an unexpected gift, a real pleasure to listen to, a talisman-chases bad luck (bad luck to live in this country that destroys the culture, the bad luck of having to attend the tribute - post-mortem? - Of an old man in San Remo, the bad luck to attend the regular rhetoric about the 'popular'...). A refuge, too, from the ugliness radio / tele / web-visual beset our everyday life.

The album, sixteen songs written and played by the quintet with an anthology of first-rate staff, some folk artists of the area: Hevia, Sergio Berardo, Fabio Rinaudo, Betti Zambruno, Filippo Gambetta, Vincenzo Zitello, Stefano Valla ...

The pieces are as bound by a shared destiny, characterized da uno stile interpretativo omogeneo, da una regia comune, e pur risultando vari nei registri non smarriscono mai il senso di un’identità unica, di un’origine che ha la sua ragione d’essere nella cultura popolare di quell’area affascinante del Piemonte, nelle sue armonie mille volte ascoltate e ballate, nel suo straordinario parlato.

Cuore dell’album (perché esiste sempre un cuore ..) “Arcanssél”, 2:49 in tutto: un valzerino che è malinconia e struggimento per un mondo che sembrerebbe tramontato, “pieno di storie e tipi d’ogni genere, piemontese, lombardo e ligure, cosmopolitan and rich in grain and dew ... "(again from the preface of the Count). Watershed between this ideal and degraded that we live a past that still seems gone altogether, the agricultural province in everyday lazy.

I have often complained about the apparent lack of 'authenticity' of certain so-called music 'folk', the wily cunning of glossy productions that play a mix of styles and forms combining traditional products in sophisticated record but cold, lifeless, to comply idea of \u200b\u200b'popular' exotic and contemporary forced Third World ( world muzak ?).

Qui, al contrario, il lavoro di produzione sfida le opportunità offerta dalla tecnologia coniugando brillantezza di suoni e profondità, professionalità e calore, tecnica ed espressione, tanto da suggerire che il discrimine in ultima analisi è l'onestà e la forza delle cose da dire, l'urgenza incoercibile di esprimerle costi quel che costi (non certo per  obbligo contrattuale o per la necessità di fare concerti...).

Il ricordo degli Orsanti, nel brano strumentale dallo stesso titolo, sul finire del disco, un piccolo capolavoro ‘felliniano’ di italianità. E sembra proprio di vederla la piazzetta di paese che is full of curious people, fascinated by the arrival dell'orsante, a little 'a bit tamer' mountebank.

"Munfrà" for short, is how best album that documents could not be the health of the Italian folk busy struggling to put itself back into the contemporary, between nostalgia and memory, anger and tenderness, sense and nonsense ...
